8th Annual Healthy Baby Fair & Family Expo

Saturday October 23rd, 2010 10:00am - 4:00pm

At the John S. Knight Convention Center in Akron Ohio, home of the Soap Box Derby.

Free Admission and Free Parking

Presented by The Akron Health Department in Partnership with Area Kiwanis Clubs

The Akron Health Department Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program announces the 8th anniversary of its annual Healthy Baby Fair & Family Expo targeting families with children ages birth to 17 years.   NEW this year is a Career Pavilion for teens and adults who seek training and job opportunities.  Employers with positions to fill and institutions offering training programs will be featured on the 2nd floor of the
JohnS.KnightConvention Center

This addition will build on last year’s successful event with community partners - Area Kiwanis Clubs, Summit County Children Services, Akron Children’s Hospital, Unison Health Plan, Buckeye Community Health Plan, Babies R Us, Western Reserve PBS, and Akron Family Magazine.  2009 attractions included more than100 exhibitors, a “Growing Up Green” youth fashion show by “The Growing Years Upscale Resale Shop” with an appearance by Betsy Kling of WKYC TV 3; an “Akron Gots Talent” Talent Show for performers in the 6th  - 9th grades with the Grand Prize winner appearing at First Night Akron; a stage show by the nationally-known Kid Concoctions Co.; The Big Red Wagon Kids’ & Maternity Consignment “MINI” Sale; Akron Children’s Hospital Health Pavilion; Healthy Homes Pavilion, a free photo in a Soap Box Derby car by the Akron Area Soap Box Derby, gift-filled tote bags to moms-to-be and goody bags to families; and, seasonal flu shots for ages 6 months to adult.

In conclusion, the Healthy Baby Fair has become the premier family expo in the region (including Cleveland).  According to the Chicago-based, U.S. E. P.A. exhibitor, it is the only event-of-its-kind between Chicago and Boston.  And, it is now getting recognition as the “go-to" event for expectant and new parents in the region.

We will continue to offer an event that contributes to the knowledge base of parents.  With the underlying theme an "ounce of prevention" has always been better than a "pound of cure”, the event offers information about preventive health, nutrition, fitness, safety, education, consumer education, and related products and services, as well as community resource information. Plan to be a part of this community service event, which continues to offer free admission and free downtown parking to the region’s families.

Mother's Day Kids Night

On May 3rd we had our monthly Kids Night at the Northwest Family Recreation Center.  Kids potted plants and then decorated them to give to their mothers.  The night was a great success and we would like to graciously thank Graf Growers Garden Center for their donation of all materials needed to make this night a success.
